Create Observation

Thank you for taking the time to enter a roadkill observation. With this data, we hope to provide a safer environment for wildlife in relationship with California motorways.

Please note that the fields marked with an asterisk (*) are required, and you will need to populate these fields with observation detail. When you create an account, some of these required fields become automatically pre-populated.

Click on the WHERE, WHEN, WHO, subheadings below to complete your record.

Small: mice, bats, squirrels, etc.
Med:raccoons, rabbits, coyotes, etc.
Large:deer, bears, etc.
Type the common name of the species and choose the result that best fits your observation.
If you don't know the exact species, but have some additional details about the roadkill (for example, you know it was a kind of rabbit) please enter that detail in this textbox.
How confident are you that you made the correct identification of the species?
WHERE: Observation Location
  • Enter the highway number and/or street name into this field.
  • Enter additional geographic information that can help, such as an exit number or a nearby town.
Map Instructions
  • Use the plus and minus buttons in the map, along with the arrow keys to zoom in on a location.
  • Click once on the map to set the point, then click and drag the point to the precise location.
  • Please try to be as accurate as possible, so zoom in to the highest magnification to position the point! Our goal is to be less than 100 meters of the impact site.
  • If you happen to know the Latitude and Longitude, you can enter those directly below the map, otherwise those values populate automatically when you create a map point.
Javascript is required to view this map.

If you wish to supply your own latitude and longitude, you may enter them above. If you leave these fields blank, the system will attempt to determine a latitude and longitude for you from the entered address. To have the system recalculate your location from the address, for example if you change the address, delete the values for these fields.
You may set the location by clicking on the map, or dragging the location marker. To clear the location and cause it to be recalculated, click on the marker.
