I strongly believe this was a dead opossum, but don't have the credentials to be 100% sure. It had a gray/white coat, a pointy nose, and a long, curling tail that was at least partly naked,. I'd estimate the length of the body at about 8" without the tail. I imagine it was killed by car impact, but that is only a guess.

I saw a fly or two buzzing near it, but didn't smell anything unusual (from a few feet away), and it was a very warm day, so I would guess that the animal died a fairly short time before I saw it.

Location Description
Eastbound Willow Avenue in Hercules, CA, between the strip mall by I-80 and the corner of Willow Ave & Cambridge, about as far out from the right-hand (condo side) curb as a driver would stand when getting out of their parked car. The closest landmark is the western-most paved footpath into the Foxboro Downs condo development.
